NDIS Plan Management Types

Agency-managed, plan-managed and self-managed NDIS plans explained, and which providers you can use with each.

Using Your NDIS Transport Funding

Many NDIS plans include funding to help you travel when you can’t use public transport without substantial difficulty because of your disability. How it appears in your plan can differ, so always check your own plan.

Transport funding is usually part of your Core Supports, in the Transport category. In some plans it is paid as a regular amount into your bank account, which you can spend on taxis, rideshare or other transport. In others it can be used to pay a registered transport provider such as Care Portal Australia under Assistance with Travel/Transport (0108).

Travel that is part of another support, such as a support worker driving you to a community activity, may also be claimed as part of that support. Ask your provider how they charge for travel before you start.

No. Transport funding is included when the NDIS decides it is reasonable and necessary for you. Check your plan, or ask your support coordinator, plan manager or LAC.

If your transport funding is paid to you as a regular amount, you can usually use it for taxis, rideshare or other transport. If it is in your plan budget instead, it is usually used to pay a provider.

Yes. A support worker can drive you as part of a support such as community participation. Travel costs are usually claimed as part of that support, so ask your provider how they charge.

Talk to your support coordinator or plan manager. If your needs have changed, you can ask the NDIS for a plan review.

Support at Home vs CHSP: What’s the Difference?

Both programs help older people stay living safely at home, and both start with an assessment through My Aged Care (1800 200 422 or myagedcare.gov.au).

Support at Home started on 1 November 2025. It replaced Home Care Packages and Short-Term Restorative Care. It is for people with more complex or ongoing needs, and gives you a budget to spend on approved services with the provider you choose.

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is entry-level support for people who need a little help to stay independent, such as help around the house, meals or transport. The Government has said CHSP will move into Support at Home no earlier than 1 July 2027.

NDIS Plan Management Types Explained

How your NDIS funding is managed affects who pays your providers and which providers you can choose. You can have different parts of your plan managed in different ways.

Care Portal Australia is a registered NDIS provider, so we can support you whether your plan is agency-managed, plan-managed or self-managed.

The NDIA pays your providers directly from your plan. You can only use NDIS registered providers, like Care Portal Australia.

A plan manager pays your invoices and helps you track your budget. You can use registered and unregistered providers. Plan management is funded separately in your plan.

You manage the funding yourself: you pay providers and claim the money back from the NDIS. This gives the most flexibility but also the most paperwork.

Your NDIS plan shows how each part of your funding is managed. You can also check in the my NDIS portal or app, or ask your LAC or support coordinator.

Plan management is funded as a separate item in your plan, so it does not come out of your other support budgets.

Yes. You can ask the NDIS to change how your plan is managed, for example at a plan check-in or review.

Yes. As a registered NDIS provider (Registration No. 4-MDXT6TH), we can work with agency-managed, plan-managed and self-managed participants.

No. Our guides are general information only. Your NDIS plan or aged care approval decides what is funded, so check with the NDIS, My Aged Care, your support coordinator or plan manager.
